MUJI 925

PRODUCT DESIGN

The proposal required filling a gap in Muji products. In order for us to do so, we had to carefully examine the shop with all its particular details. We examined everything from the myriad of products they offer to their interiors and packaging.

In order for us to create a successful project, we also had to understand Muji's philosophy. MUJI, originally founded in Japan in 1980, offers a wide variety of good quality products including household goods, apparel and food. Mujirushi Ryohin, MUJI in Japanese, translates as "no-brand qua", they focus mostly on creating minimalistic products with very simplistic packaging. During this in-depth analysis of Muji, we could not help but notice a crack. Muii claims to offer a massive variety of products, including everything and everyone, however, we have found that this is not entirely true. Muji neglected a prominent customer base, people who are constantly on the go. This includes many of us, full-time students, 9 to 5 workers, working parents, and many more.

After realizing this small gap, we could not help but notice the problem everywhere we go. Wherever we look, we find people carrying too much, struggling to handle and organise all their belongings. Youngsters with multiple backpacks were all around us. Workers struggling to use their laptops on public transportation due to very little space, and so on.

This encouraged us to focus our project on this particular customer base, hence, inspiring the name 925.
